Hey everyone,
I am a new member. My name is Erik, I look forward to meeting a bunch of you at the next meeting. For reference I’m a newer woodworker and really enjoy planing. I have a low angle block plane from woodriver, a Lee Nielson number 4, Stanley number 5 Jack, a transitional number six, and a Stanley number 7.
So as for the reason for my post/question:
I sniped a keen kutter no 8 hand plane off an auction. I’m having issues with it generating any kind of shavings. Instead of shavings I get little chips where it’s not slicing the wood but instead scraping it.
I also get a lot of debris stuck between the chip breaker and the iron (I am not leaving much of a gap between the back of the iron to the chip breaker either).
I have also noticed that the depth adjustment screw it’s pretty wonky and sometimes the y handle comes off if adjusted too far.
What I have tried-
I have sharpened the original iron numerous times (disproportionately to the amount of hours I’ve used it.)
I have adjusted the frog to make the mouth smaller and larger.
I also purchased a v011 iron from veritas with a new chip breaker. This pair has a way more flush fit than the original iron and chip breaker. It’s still clogs. The iron and chip breaker don’t exactly fit very well either- The cast iron screw from the new setup is a little bit wider than the original.
My Stanleys have given me an appreciation for vintage planes and their value.
Anyone have any ideas if this plane might be salvageable, or other items to try?
Erik, glad you've joined the club. I'm afraid I can't help you with your problem. I'm going to send out an email to generate interest in our Forums and hopefully someone can solve your problem.
